A Princess and Her Shoes

Princess Maggie is a girl who loves shoes. She particularly loves her hot pink mary janes. Clearly these shoes have been very loved and seen better days....

I was looking at the scuffed toes and thinking about throwing them out but aside from the toes they're still in pretty good shape.
"If only  there was something I could just stick over the toes", I thought.
*light bulb*
Duct tape! It fixes everything right?
So, we headed to the store and found all kinds of cool duct tape patterns, including this rockin zebra print!

Now, I thought I could just take it home, rip off a piece and
slap it down on the shoe. Not so.
I ended up cutting the tape into pieces and taping it to the shoe in
somewhat of a "collage" method.
I planned on just covering the toe but it was so dang cute that
I got carried away and decided to cover the whole thing.
I wasn't sure how well the duct tape would stay put and I didn't want it peeling off
so I applied a layer of Mod Podge (love the stuff!)
After letting it dry overnight it was still a bit tacky so
I sprayed it with an acrylic sealer.
I let them dry another 24 hours before I'd let Maggie wear them just to be safe.

What can I say? I think she likes them! :)

And so, the Princess was happy and her shoes lived to see another day!

  11. Those are pretty neat I think. And just last week end when shopping with my hubby he asked why people would want such fancy duct tape. I laughed and said for crafting. He looked at me like I was nuts.

  18. Thanks Kammy! I'd love to! The duct tape goes a long way! We still have about half a roll of it left. There are so many fun designs to choose from. I think I need some leopard print also. I'd love to link up at your blog. I'll go check it out. Thank you!

  24. Wow, this is such a great idea! We've taped up jeans and put bits of tape on sneakers, but not on hard shoes like your daughters.

  26. Saw this on Pinterest, and came to look. My question: Are these shoes still flexible to walk in? I would imagine that they would get pretty rigid after the Mod Podge.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Nope, not rigid at all! She says they're just as comfortable as they were before. Thanks for stopping by Denise! :)

  28. I was wondering what size pieces you used and what is best to cut the duct tape with? These are great, and I'm going to try it on two little pair of shoes my twin daughters ruined the first weekend they got them! :)

    1. Hi Amy! Good question - I didn't exactly measure the pieces, I just ripped them off of the tape roll in different sizes. I would guess between 2 and 4 inches. Does that help?

  30. I have the same problem with my girls' Mary Janes. I like the Duct Tape idea. I used Mod Podge and Fabric, but I think your way would be even easier. :)

  31. These are so cute! I wonder if there was something with those shoes. My daughter's did the same thing and so did her little friend. I think she's outgrown them now, wish I'd thought to give them a a makeover like you did!
