Last month Isaac turned ten!
He's my little football star, so it was no surprise that he asked for a football cake.
I found an awesome cake pan online, but by the time I found it there's no way it would have got here in time.

So, I had to wing it and make the cake without a fancy cake pan.
I don't have any step by step photos, because frankly I didn't know how it would turn out!
I used a chocolate cake mix from the grocery store and baked it in 2 round cake pans.
While the cakes were cooling I drew a football "stencil" on a blank piece of paper.
After the cakes had cooled I laid the stencil on over the first cake and cut out the football shape, then I repeated that with the second cake.
Using this amazing Chocolate Buttercream Frosting recipe from Sweet Savory Life (thank you Alice!) I applied a layer of frosting between the two cakes.
I piped the frosting onto the football cakes with a decorative star tip.
This frosting piped beautifully! I wish I'd found it years ago.
To make the lacing on the football I just used a white tube of frosting from the grocery store.
Success!
Looks like a football to me!
My Mancub was thrilled with his cake!
He is wishing really hard for a ripstick.
What a lucky birthday boy!
